Greg Maissen  by Greg Maissen, Redwood Region President (November 2011)

November is here, and that means it's election time here in the Redwood Region.

After having served as your President for the last two years, I feel confident in having reached the goals that I set out to achieve when I first took over as President.

It is not desirable to take on a leadership position during turbulent times. This was the case two years ago when I stepped into the Presidency. However, positive things can happen with the right foundation and support sytem in place. In my case, I would first like to thank Past President Kurt Fischer for the role he played in providing us a very stable and active Region prior to our "rough spot". Thank you, Kurt, for all of the hard work you put into the Club when you were President, and for your constant enthusiasm to this day.

In addition, I want to extend my sincere gratitude to Past President and 2011 Secretary David Bunch. From the very beginning of my Presidency, David has been there to give me support. He has always been ready and very willing to assist me in any way, and just knowing that I can tap into his vast knowledge of all things PCA has allowed me to sleep at night (seriously, the last thing that I would think of before going to sleep and the first thing on my mind when I awoke was the Redwood Region). To this day, David continues to fill any position needed in the Club. As an example, for 2012, David will be stepping back into the position of our Autocross Director. Thank you, David!

I also want everyone to know how appreciative I am of our Zone 7 Representative, Sharon Neidel. Sharon spent countless hours helping me sort out Club issues early on in my Presidency and without her support I would have had permanent insomnia. Speaking of insomnia, I have to believe that Sharon never sleeps due to all of the hard work that she does, not only for the Redwood Region, but for all of the other Regions in Zone 7, as well as coordinating events like Rennsport Reunion IV. Thank you, Sharon. May your eyelids find rest in the near future.

One of the issues that became clear to me (including concern voiced from our members) early in my Presidency was whether the Club was stable, and whether we had the right Board Members. As you have all experienced by now, the answer to both of those questions is a very resounding YES!

Measures have been taken to update our Bylaws to prevent a similar situation from ever occuring again. Additionally, the Board has created a "Region Procedures Manual" that explicitly defines the responsibilites of each position on the Board. In other words, we have backup.

As I look forward to next year, I am very excited about what lies ahead. We have a Region that is always evolving due to our members. The candidates who are running for elected positions on the Board for 2012 are great examples of this, and I am very excited to give them all my full support.

Vern Rogers has served as your Vice President for two years now and before that he had not held a Board position. He has been an excellent Vice President and has managed his responsibilities with absolute attention to detail and professionalism. Not only does he have a full understanding of the duties of the Presidency, but also his demeanor and grace will set a very nice tone in the Region.

Chris Harrell has served as our Newsletter Editor, and as evidenced by Chris's amazing work with the Newsletter, Chris will make a fantastic Vice President. Chris also has the qualities and character that are important in any leadership position. I cannot think of a better combination of President and Vice President than Vern and Chris. Together they will lead the way in continuing to evolve the Club that we all enjoy so much.

Mike Hinton has come to us as a very enthusiastic member. Mike is always stepping up to support the Club in any way he can, from helping with Autocross and writing an editorial in the Newsletter to sitting on the Financial Review Committee. Mike running for Secretary is an excellent example of how strong our Club is with member involvement.

Jerry Gladstone has served as our recent past Secretary and stepped up as our Treasurer in a time of transition. Jerry has brought clarity in our recordkeeping when it was needed most and continues to give the Region solid direction. I am very grateful not only for this, but for Jerry's insight into the Region as well.

I encourage you to vote with me for the candidates above to enable the Redwood Region to continue on its path of stability, fun, and member involvement for the foreseeable future.

OK - I will step off of my soapbox momentarily to encourage everyone to come out to our last few events for 2011....

There is a Tech Session at Tec Automotive on Saturday, November 12, 2011.

After you learn more about your car, you can get one more autocross under your fan belt with SVR at Infineon Raceway on Saturday, November 19, 2011.

Of course, don't forget our annual Holiday Party at Segheiso Family Vineyards on Saturday, December 10, 2011.

That's it for me for now. Remember to check our website for updates. Also be sure to visit Redwood Region's Facebook page. iPhone users should check out the PCA app for iPhone.

I will see you at the next event.
