Greg Maissen  by Greg Maissen, Redwood Region President (October 2011)

Summer is officially over, and as I look back on our region calendar I am reminded of the many fantastic events we have enjoyed in 2011. We are very lucky to live in an area that offers so much diversity, and just as fortunate to have such a great group of members that put so much hard work into organizing our many events.

Fall has arrived, but I don't need to look at the calendar to know this. I just have to think back a few days to our last event, which was the Redwood Region Zone 7 Concours on Sunday, 9/25 at Ledson Winery in Kenwood.

If you have never entered a car in a Concours, here is a little insight. At a minimum, you will spend a solid week preparing, cleaning, and detailing your car, which involves removing everything inside of the car, from the carpets to the seats, to be clean enough to impress a C.S.I. investigator. Next, you will strip off all of the old wax from the paint, use a clay bar to remove any debris, then polish the paint and finally apply enough coats of wax to make Jerry Seinfeld want to buy your car (and never sell it).

Of course, you take a huge risk in doing this, as we all know that when you wash your car it will rain. And that is exactly what happened last Sunday, marking the kickoff to fall, albeit a bit too early. The best that you can do under these circumstances is to wait for the rain to stop, quickly run over and dry off your car to prevent any water spots (and the sun from marring the paint), then remind yourself that you are at a winery and take advantage of the free tastings to ease the pain.

Needless to say, judging cars at the 9/25 event became a bit interesting as a result of the rain, but thanks to our Concours Director James Heisey, everything went smoothly and many of us went home with an award and a new strategy for next year's Concours season.

Don't let this somewhat strange weather deter you from participating in the few events that are remaining.

We will be having our Zone 7 two-day Autocross, Stompin' at the Schulz, on Saturday, 10/8 and Sunday, 10/9. Our Autocross Director Tom Strobel, along with his daughter Alycia, his wife Wendy, and Mac and Becky Cranford, have been doing a fantastic job this year keeping everything in order and putting on some great events. Come on out and enjoy the last Autocross of 2011 for the Redwood Region and let them all know how much you appreciate their work.

Also, If you have not made plans to attend Rennsport Reunion IV at Laguna Seca from Friday, 10/14 through Sunday, 10/16, you had better get a move on as this is a major event for all that is Porsche. Don't miss it!

Our final Breakfast Tour of 2011 and Annual Members' Meeting will be held on Saturday, 10/22. We will meet at Chevy's in Novato at 9:00 a.m. and take a nice drive out to the Union Hotel in Occidental. This will be your last chance to officially throw your hat into the ring for any of the elected positions on the Redwood Region Board of Directors for 2012, or you can just come on out and let us know what's on your mind. We will make a presentation on the year's progress and then have an open mic for anyone who would like to speak. This is your club, so don't be shy.

Don't forget to mark your calendar for Saturday, 12/10, which is the date of our Annual Holiday Party; this year's party will be at Seghesio Winery in Healdsburg. Social Director Don Magdanz has been working very hard on getting everything lined up for this event. Seghesio's resident Executive Chef Peter Janiak will be preparing gourmet dishes to complement their famous wines. A live band will also be on hand to set the mood for a wonderful night of socializing, door prizes, and surprises, and we have been able to lower the cost from $100.00 per person to just $75.00 per person with the assistance of a subsidy from the Redwood Region to our members. Please RSVP to Don Magdanz by November 21. You will regret missing this party if you do not attend!

Check out our website for details about the holiday party and all other Redwood Region activities. Also be sure to visit Redwood Region's Facebook page. iPhone users should check out the PCA app for iPhone.

See you at the next event.
