Estates Winery Tour
by Kurt Fischer, Redwood Region, Past President
Dateline....Saturday May 23, 2015...what do 26 fine Porsches and 44
happy people do? We're off to the highways and byways of Lake
County courtesy of our Vice President, Craig Steele with a visit to
Langtry Estates Winery.
We leave our
meeting place about 9:30 am with backroads to Lake County set in our
minds and clear roads ahead! The sun appears just as we leave
Sonoma County and we stop at the Calpine Geothermal Visitor Center for a
regroup and bio break.
Looking off in the hills surrounding Middletown you could see the plumes
from the geysers which generate a lot of heat and power for the local
area! It is amazing the amount of thermal activity that lies just
beneath those hills. The Visitor Center was a wealth of knowledge. Not
only do we drive the back roads...we learn!
Off in big circle
of quiet and well maintained roads with little or no traffic is just the
way we like our backroads for our arrival at Langtry.
Estates covers over 23,000 acres of Lake and northern Napa County and I
think must be the largest winery in the State of California! We
are met by long term winery guy...Scotty... who imparts his wine
knowledge on us as we tour through the steel tanks and oak barrels and
into the tasting room. In my humble opinion...Langtry's wine price
point is way below the standard pricing of Sonoma and Napa County and
We are outside sitting under a canopy of
wisteria with picnic tables lined up for our box lunches and of course,
our wines from Langtry! Lunch is always a noisy event with this
group...conversations all over the board!
Suddenly the skies darken and we are treated a
light mist of rain drops and in the distance... thunder boomers! No
lighting just deep rumbles and enough rain to have people scurry back to
their tops downs and sunroofs open. Not a problem, once the cars are
buttoned up...we are back to finish lunch...this group is not deterred
from a good time!
On the way home... the wipers were on for the
next 20 minutes then into the sunshine! Many thanks to Craig Steele for
setting this tour and Scotty from Langtry for his great presentation of
his wine knowledge and hospitality!
Join us for our next winery tour...July 18, 2015... where we
visit Field Stone Winery. These tours are a great combination
of back roads, good food and wine!
