Thunderhill Raceway Park hosted the Porsche Club of America on
September 6th and 7th for a combined Driver's Education, Time Trial and
Club Race. Attending Redwood Region members included Andy Brian, Dean
Lyon, Mac Cranford, Dave Sams, John Hollander and Redwood President Vern
Rogers ready to tackle the extended five mile track. Dave Bunch took
duties at start-finish to oversee the grid line-up. Paul Czopek, Zone 7
Representative, was there as part of the Club Racing activity.
New to many drivers was the addition of the West Track which increased
the track length to a five mile lap! Our own memories of Thunderhill go
back to 1993 when Porsche Club members accepted SCCA's invitation to
visit the new track and run fast parade laps to season the fresh asphalt
prior to the first official race event.
From a very basic layout of one temporary building and a few outhouses,
this track has evolved into a first rate facility for Northern
California racers and track day enthusiasts. Lunch gave us the
opportunity to experience the track with Parade laps in our 944 on the
new West Track addition. There is a lot to learn here with elevation
changes, tight corners, and several blind rises.
Zone 7 Region Instructor/Volunteers offered new drivers an opportunity
to take their driving education to the next level - one more way to
enjoy the Porsche motoring experience.
