Visit to the Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen

On August 3, 1964 my wife, Vee, and I picked up our 356SC British Racing Green coupe at the factory in Zuffenhausen and took it on a wonderful tour of Germany and France for our honeymoon.* On July 1, 2011, our 47th wedding anniversary, we visited the factory again on the first leg of our 47th honeymoon tour of Germany and Austria. Unfortunately we were not picking up a new Porsche and, even worse, we were driving my wife's nephew's Audi TT.

The staff at the reception desk at the museum were extremely friendly and helpful and gave us the PCA club member discount even though I had forgotten our membership card at home (the visit was spontaneous and not part of a travel plan). We joined a 30 minute tour of Porsche technology led by a very knowledgeable young woman and then spent another hour and a half touring the exhibit. We made luncheon reservations at the beautiful Christophorus restaurant with stunning views of the factory and excellent food. It was very cool to see GT3's and other high performance cars coming off the production line and driving through the works for whatever step came next.

When we recounted our visit to Vee's German relatives, the first question was what kind of car did we buy. We confessed that our sole purchase had been a new key ring for our 2005 Boxster, for which we did not receive the discount without our PCA card. Vee and I can highly recommend a visit to the museum as part of a trip to Germany whether picking up a new car or not.

*Note: Vee and I had planned to keep the 356SC forever but then Porsche brought out the Boxster in 1997. We took a test drive at Michael Stead Porsche in Walnut Creek and were hooked. Our first Boxster was a 2000 and we sold our 356SC to a classic car dealer from Europe who promptly shipped it back to Rotterdam from whence it had left for the USA in September 1964. We left all our papers with the car, which led to the eventual buyers contacting us via the internet. They were a young couple from Amsterdam who are taking excellent care of the car. They even came over to visit us here in Napa.
